About
A rare begonia from humid montane and lowland tropical forest in New Guinea. It grows in warm, shaded, humid conditions on moist organic substrate where its finely divided foliage rises from a creeping rhizomatous base. It is notable for its deeply bipinnatifid leaves composed of narrow, toothed lobes. The foliage is airy and highly dissected, borne on red petioles from a creeping rhizome, with reddish undersides enhancing its delicate yet dramatic appearance.

New Guinea’s Fern Pretender
New Guinea begonias occupy a fairly specialist position — the island produces an astonishing diversity of begonias, not all of which translate willingly into domestic cultivation. Begonia bipinnatifida produces deeply bipinnately cut leaves that look, at a casual glance, more like a maidenhair fern than a begonia — an architectural plant with an unusual growth form and somewhat demanding humidity requirements for humid montane forest conditions. Priced at the upper middle tier for what is genuinely a specialist plant. Worth it for those willing to maintain the environment it requires.
