About
Begonia ferox is a striking species endemic to the humid limestone forests of Guangxi, China, where it thrives in shaded karst habitats at low to mid elevations. This rhizomatous plant grows on moist, humus-rich limestone soil, preferring warm, humid conditions and filtered light. Its distinctive morphology includes thick, asymmetrical leaves heavily covered in numerous dark conical bullae, giving it a uniquely textured, almost prehistoric appearance. The upper leaf surface is a deep green with prominent venation, contrasting sharply with the maroon to burgundy underside. Short, densely spiny petioles complete its rugged aesthetic, making it a highly sought-after plant for collectors.

The Spiny Guangxi Species
From the karst limestone outcrops of Guangxi Province in China, this species produces leaves adorned with dense, erect spinescent growths on the upper surface — a surface treatment more typically associated with cacti than with shade-tolerant woodland plants. Described as part of the wave of Guangxi species formalised in recent years by Chinese and international botanists working the province's extraordinary endemism. At accessible pricing for what is a genuinely unusual textural specimen. Humid, shaded, well-drained limestone substrate conditions apply, as they do for virtually everything from this remarkable province.
