About

Philodendron spiritus-sancti is legendary within the aroid hobby. Characterized by its extraordinarily elongated, dangling lanceolate leaves with deep sinus lobes, this prized specimen originates from a highly restricted wild habitat in Brazil. Historically fetching thousands of pounds, the emergence of micropropagation and tissue culture has begun shifting market dynamics, though mature, high-character specimens still command premium investments from dedicated collectors.

How prices are calculated: The AA Price uses verified eBay UK completed auction data — we take the trimmed mean (removing the top and bottom 20% of prices) to produce a fair-value guide that excludes outlier sales. When recent auction data is unavailable, the AA Price falls back to the current UK retail average from tracked stockists. Retail prices are scraped from active UK plant shop listings and reflect what you would pay buying directly from a retailer today. All prices are in GBP and updated automatically.

Hunting the Ghost of Espírito Santo

Philodendron spiritus-sancti is the holy grail of rare aroids, endemic to a tiny area of Atlantic Forest in Espírito Santo, Brazil. Described in 1987 by George Bunting, it is critically endangered in the wild, with only a handful of mature specimens left in their natural habitat. Its long, dangling lanceolate leaves and reddish-purple petioles are legendary. In recent years, micropropagation has helped make this once-mythical plant accessible to collectors, but mature specimens remain prized. Studies on the conservation genetics of P. spiritus-sancti highlight the importance of ex-situ cultivation to prevent total extinction.
