Begonia malachosticta
Spotted Cane Begonia

Morphology
About
Begonia malachosticta, described by Kollmann and Fontana, is an upright cane species from the humid, shaded tropical forests of Ecuador — growing in warm, moist understory conditions where filtered light, high humidity, and rich organic substrate from leaf litter and decaying wood create the environment it requires. The red, setose (bristly-hairy) stems and petioles are an immediate distinguishing feature even before the leaves are examined; those leaves are asymmetrical and elongate-ovate with a dark green upper surface densely spotted with pale green to whitish maculations that cover the blade in a pattern of considerable visual interest. Deep red undersides complete the display. The natural branching cane habit produces a plant of moderate size that is manageable in cultivation while remaining genuinely uncommon in the UK trade.

Market Analysis & Price Guide
Historical auction metrics and live online retailer listings updated weekly.
How prices are calculated: The AA Price uses verified eBay UK completed auction data — we take the trimmed mean (removing the top and bottom 20% of prices) to produce a fair-value guide that excludes outlier sales. When recent auction data is unavailable, the AA Price falls back to the current UK retail average from tracked stockists. Retail prices are scraped from active UK plant shop listings and reflect what you would pay buying directly from a retailer today. All prices are in GBP and updated automatically.
