Begonia dregei
Dwarf Grape Begonia

Morphology
About
Begonia dregei, described by Otto and Dietrich, is a caudiform species endemic to rocky slopes and forest margins of eastern South Africa — occurring in seasonally moist habitats with bright filtered light and well-drained, humus-rich substrate among leaf litter and stones. It is the only commonly cultivated South African Begonia to develop a pronounced caudex: a swollen, thickened tuberous base that enlarges gradually over years, eventually producing the bonsai-like appearance that has made this species a favourite among succulent and caudex collectors as well as dedicated begonia enthusiasts. From the caudex, slender reddish stems produce a naturally shrubby, multibranched habit carrying small, asymmetrical, rounded to ovate leaves with crenate margins. South African in origin but Japanese in the aesthetic it suggests, dregei appeals well beyond the conventional begonia collector.

Market Analysis & Price Guide
Historical auction metrics and live online retailer listings updated weekly.
How prices are calculated: The AA Price uses verified eBay UK completed auction data — we take the trimmed mean (removing the top and bottom 20% of prices) to produce a fair-value guide that excludes outlier sales. When recent auction data is unavailable, the AA Price falls back to the current UK retail average from tracked stockists. Retail prices are scraped from active UK plant shop listings and reflect what you would pay buying directly from a retailer today. All prices are in GBP and updated automatically.
