Begonia acetosa
Velvet Begonia

Morphology
About
Begonia acetosa is a rhizomatous begonia native to the humid, shaded understory of the Atlantic Forest in southeastern Brazil, growing on rich humus-laden soil and among decaying leaf litter where high humidity and filtered light combine to support its distinctive foliage. Its creeping rhizome produces large, star-like, velvety leaves on long petioles — the upper surface ranging from olive-green to brownish with a pronounced velvet nap, while the undersides carry a contrasting wine-red colouration that is visible at any angle. This chromatic contrast between leaf faces, combined with considerable leaf size and a bold palmate outline, elevates acetosa well above the common garden begonia in collector esteem. A genuinely rewarding specimen plant for those with the humidity to do it justice.

Market Analysis & Price Guide
Historical auction metrics and live online retailer listings updated weekly.
How prices are calculated: The AA Price uses verified eBay UK completed auction data — we take the trimmed mean (removing the top and bottom 20% of prices) to produce a fair-value guide that excludes outlier sales. When recent auction data is unavailable, the AA Price falls back to the current UK retail average from tracked stockists. Retail prices are scraped from active UK plant shop listings and reflect what you would pay buying directly from a retailer today. All prices are in GBP and updated automatically.
