About

Anthurium papillilaminum is a rare and highly desirable collector species native to the humid tropical forests of Panama, where it grows terrestrially or epiphytically in shaded understory conditions. Its elongated, cordate to triangular-cordate leaves are among the darkest in the genus — deep green to near-black — with a dense, velvety surface and subtle venation that creates a refined, almost monochromatic beauty. The leaves taper to a narrow, elegant apex and arise from a compact basal crown with short internodes. It is considered a gem of the black velvet Anthurium category.

How prices are calculated: The AA Price uses verified eBay UK completed auction data — we take the trimmed mean (removing the top and bottom 20% of prices) to produce a fair-value guide that excludes outlier sales. When recent auction data is unavailable, the AA Price falls back to the current UK retail average from tracked stockists. Retail prices are scraped from active UK plant shop listings and reflect what you would pay buying directly from a retailer today. All prices are in GBP and updated automatically.

Dark as Midnight

Anthurium papillilaminum is the darkest of the dark velvet Anthurium — the species produces leaves so deep green they read as near-black in most lighting conditions. Described by Croat from Panamanian material, it grows in deeply shaded lowland forest where light levels are consistently low, which may explain the extreme development of dark pigmentation. The subtle venation barely registers against the dark blade, giving the plant an almost monolithic presence. In cultivation it responds well to high humidity and filtered light, and is notably slow — a characteristic that only adds to its exclusivity on the collector market.
