About

Alocasia scalprum is a fascinating species originating from the humid wet tropical forests of the Philippines, specifically found in Samar. This compact, self-heading Alocasia grows terrestrially in warm, humid understory conditions, typically reaching a medium size. Its distinctive leaves are narrow sagittate to lanceolate, featuring a metallic dark green surface with a deeply quilted and heavily bullate texture. The prominent veins and slightly purplish undersides add to its unique 'armor-like' appearance, adapting it perfectly to its shaded native habitat.

How prices are calculated: The AA Price uses verified eBay UK completed auction data — we take the trimmed mean (removing the top and bottom 20% of prices) to produce a fair-value guide that excludes outlier sales. When recent auction data is unavailable, the AA Price falls back to the current UK retail average from tracked stockists. Retail prices are scraped from active UK plant shop listings and reflect what you would pay buying directly from a retailer today. All prices are in GBP and updated automatically.

A Most Peculiar Quilt from Samar

Right, a proper cuppa ready, let's discuss *Alocasia scalprum*. This rather intriguing chap hails from Samar in the humid, wet tropical forests of the Philippines, a fascinating discovery indeed. Alistair Hay, bless him, formally described it only recently. It’s a wonderfully compact, self-heading species, perfectly adapted to its shaded understory habitat. Those leaves! Narrowly sagittate to lanceolate, with a metallic dark green surface that’s almost absurdly quilted and bullate. Gives it a splendid 'armor-like' quality, doesn’t it? The prominent veins and purplish undersides are a fine touch. Keeps one quite chuffed in these drafty British glasshouses, a stark reminder of warmer climes. A worthwhile addition, though careful with the humidity; propogating them can be a bit of a faff.
